Persons with Bulimia Nervosa will experiance a cycle known as the binge and purge cycle.
During this time the person will eat a large amount of food, much larger than that of a normal sized meal and imediatley after experiance intense guilt or fear of weight gain. The person will then go out of there way to purge the food from there bodies. A person with bulimia must repete this cycle at least 2 times in a 2 week period for 3 month before a diagnosis can be made. Other symptoms include, distorted body image, strive to be thin, dissasociation, depression, addictive prsonalitiy and OCD.
A person with bulimia nervosa must be of average weight or slightly overweight. If the person is underweight it is most likley the person has purging type anorexia.
During the ‘purge’ part of the cycle the person will induce vomiting or use laxatives, diaretics or diet pills.
None purging type:
Puring the purge part or the cycle the person does not vomit or use pills but uses methods souch as fasting or exercise.
Anorexia Nervosa (restrictive type)
There are 2 types of anorexia nervosa, the restrictive type is were the person will severly limit there intake or calories and often exercise. A person with anorexia will refuse to mentain a healthy body weight of 85% of that expected for there age and hight. A person with anorexia must have lost there period for at least 3 months. Other symptoms include, distorted body image, intense fear of weight gain, OCD, depression , frear of rejection, intense need to be thin, pre-occupation with body and weight, addictive personalitys.
Anorexia nervosa (purging type)
This type of anorexia nervosa is often not diagnosed by doctors because it is very similar to bulimia nervosa. The main difference is that a person with Purging Type Anorexia Nervosa will have a severley low body weight less that 85% of that expected for there hight and age. A person with this disorder will binge on large amounts of food and then induce vomiting to compansate for the binge.
Like restrictive anorexia, a diagnosis for purging type anorexia can not be made unless the person has lost there period for at least 3 months. Other symptoms include, distorted body image, intense fear of weight gain, OCD, depression and frear of rejection, intense need to be thin, pre-occupation with body and weight, addictive personalitys.
EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified) is most often refered to as ‘eating difficulties’ or ‘eating problems’ it is very rare that a person will be diagnosed with EDNOS (in the UK especialy)
EDNOS is were you do not fit the criteria for the other eating disorders, usualy people do not meet the required weight for anorexia nervosa or dont go through the binge and purge cycle often enough to be diagnosed with bulimia nervosa. People often see this disorder as ‘less severe’ than other eating disorders because you dont fit the criteria for the well knowen ED’s but this is NOT true. EDNOS is just as deadly as any other ED and causes the person just as much mental distress.
Binge Eating Disorder or Compulsive Over Eating:
BED also knowen as COE was only recently recognised as its own eaing disorder.
A person with DED or COE will engage in binging behaviours very similar to that of someone with bulima nervosa but they do not Purge there food. During a binge a person will consume a much larger amount of food than considerd to be normal often in an effort to push out emotions or comfort themselfs in some way. BED or COE is a very dangerous eating disorder and causes many medical risks, it also causes the person alot of mental pain.
